Ghost story peter6/10/2023 ![]() The women in the house knew it and so did the children.” In the Nobel prize-winning author’s most famous book, the ghost of a baby killed by her mother to save her from slavery is a malicious sprite but also a metaphor for the way in which the great evil of slavery haunts its victims after abolition, haunts the history of America and should haunt us all. This great testament to the horrors of slavery opens with a haunting. The very best ghost stories get you to suspend your disbelief because whatever the nature of their manifestation the rationale for that ghost existing is entirely convincing: here are some of them. Suddenly, there are a lot of verbs that can only be employed with the greatest of caution. The minute your ghost talks about whisking from one place to the next, or floating along a pavement, they sound like Casper. It’s surprisingly hard not to make a narrator-ghost appear twee. ![]() That created other problems, though – what could my ghost do? Could she move objects, pass through walls? ![]() ![]() In the case of Platform Seven, I answered that question right at the start by having the whole novel narrated by a ghost – that of a young woman who has died on Peterborough railway station and finds herself trapped there until the mystery of her death is solved. ![]()

During this period, Delhi also suffered the predations of the Afghan Ahmad Shah Durrani, the loss of the Empire’s economic powerhouse of Bengal, the rise of competing power centers and innumerable political and personal humiliations. This is both the story of the rise of the East India Company, but also a history of the period dubbed “The Anarchy”, roughly between the 1739 sack of Delhi to the British installing themselves in the Mughal capital in 1803. The title and subtitle indicate two different, albeit interlocking, themes. ![]() Dalrymple lets the protagonists speak for themselves as much as possible, protagonists which thankfully, but not surprisingly given the author, include Indians as much as Europeans. The Anarchy doesn’t disappoint: readable, informative, full of color. A new book by William Dalrymple is always something of an event. ![]() Lingus mariana6/8/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() (no more than any other romance with a hero who had slept around and we get to meet any number of his ex’s anyway) Yes they meet at a porn convention, and he has to go away to film for a weekend once but that is not at all detailed. ![]() It is a bit different from the usual for this author (especially as I had just read Kulti and The Wall of Winnipeg and me), the hero is friendly, and very likeable.Īnd even him being a porn star was not overly shoved **ahem** in my face. None of these events are ‘re-imagined’ and the world is not an alternate universe, a dystopian or indeed utopian future. There are real celebrities mentioned, many many real songs from the correct periods mentioned, and references to real events such as the Vietnam war, World War 2, student riots in Japanese universities etc. Murakami is not ‘imagining the future’ as one reviewer mentioned, the book is set in the late 1980’s in Japan, a real time, and in real places. Dance, Dance, Dance, is not science fiction. ![]() With ‘Dance, Dance, Dance’ this was especially irritating, as the blurb and some of the quotes (in my opinion, feel free to correct me) completely misrepresent Murakami’s work. The same goes for many reviewers, or the people who choose which quotes go onto book covers. I honestly believe that the people who write the blurbs on the back of books must not have read the books they are writing about (This is a long running bugbear of mine). ![]() In His Command by Rie Warren6/8/2023 ![]() Now, the final endgame of the war is pitted against the rebels' race to find a cure before Leon becomes a full-blown carrier and Darke loses the man who managed to win his love and bring him back to life. ![]() Download for offline reading, highlight, bookmark or take notes while you. maga- zines covering a broad spectrum the first of his poems to command.
